Before you sign
- Many states require at least 30 days' notice. Some require 60 or 90 days for larger increases, and some states and cities cap how much rent can go up. The state tips on the last step cover your state.
- A fixed-term lease usually cannot be raised until it ends, unless the lease allows it.
- Keep a copy, and write down how and when you delivered the notice. Hand delivery or certified mail makes it easy to prove.
