First, pick the right state

Every form on this site asks for a state before anything else. That is on purpose. The rules for a bill of sale, a rental agreement or a promissory note are set by each state, and they are not the same from one state to the next. The state you choose decides which rules we use for your form.

Why it matters

Notice and waiting times differ. How many days of notice a landlord must give to raise rent or end a rental changes by state.
Money limits differ. States cap security deposits, late fees and interest rates in different ways, and some set no cap at all.
Signing rules differ. Some documents need a witness or a notary in one state and neither in another.
Wording differs. Some states require certain sentences or notices to appear in the document for it to hold up.

Which state should you choose?

Anything about a place (a rental, a room, a lot, a storage unit): choose the state where the property is, even if you live somewhere else.
Anything about a vehicle or a boat: choose the state where it is registered or will be registered.
Anything about a person (a travel permission, a medical consent, a gift letter): choose the state where that person lives.
Anything about a business (an operating agreement, bylaws, an offer letter): choose the state where the business is set up. For a job offer, choose the state where the person will work.
