Vehicle Bill of Sale

A bill of sale for a car, truck, motorcycle, trailer, or RV, with the VIN and mileage.

Good for: Anyone buying or selling a vehicle from or to another person.

Before you sign

  • The seller must also sign the title over to the buyer. A bill of sale does not replace the title.
  • Copy the VIN straight from the vehicle and compare it to the title. They must match.
  • Many states have their own bill of sale or transfer form, or require a notary or a signed odometer statement. The state tips on the last step cover this.
  • The seller should report the sale to the state motor vehicle office, and the buyer should register the vehicle, within the time your state allows.
